Memorial Day Remembering We took lilacs up today to the cemetery
to put on all the FULLER graves.
It was raining when we left home
cleared at the cemetary
and then

on the way home we had a downpour.
But the remembering is always good.

a bit of Sunday advice
As the sacrament tray was passing by, small son grabbed a whole bunch
and then the mother realized,
she'd forgotten to feed him lunch!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love it when I pick up a book and it opens to a page I've underlined in red on some past day.
Today it was THE STORY OF MY LIFE by Helen Keller. in a note sent to Oliver Wendell
Holmes she wrote this:
April 1891
Your beautiful words about spring have been making music in my heart
these bright April days. I love every word of "Spring has come"
I think you will be glad to hear that these poems have taught me to enjoy and love the beautiful springtime, even though I cannot see the fair, frail
blossoms which proclaim its approach,
or hear the joyous warbling of the home-coming birds.
But when I read "Spring has come"
LO
I AM NOT BLIND ANY LONGER
FOR I SEE WITH YOUR EYES AND
HEAR WITH YOUR EARS.
Sweet Mother Nature can have no secrets from me
when my poet is near.
Now, that kind of praise is music to a poet's ears. Occasionally I'll get a note from someone
who tells me what I have written is what they felt .When we were on our mission, I got the following poem back from Sister Donna Schaefer which made me float for days.
To Sister Fuller (in appreciation)
If I could write a poem like you
I would try
And the reason why
is because the words seem real
They feel quite alive
when you put them together the way you do
The words don't just lie there on the paper.
They fly.
They bounce.
They swirl
And before long they belong to me
I can recall a snatch
and catch anew the sensation,
the elation,
as they dance in my heart.
They aren't just words that rhyme~~
They're thoughts that climb
and prod the mind.
When I first received that poem, I saw only the praise, but now as I type I see a POEM. Her rhyming just cames in different places than mine, and the meter is different. All writers have their own style, and all love the feeling of creativity.
I got up early (5 a.m) and was straightening up my desk. I came across a pile of little scrap notes with little ideas I'd heard which are good. I like one-liners that make you think:
1. Women are angels. When someone breaks our wings we simply continue to fly
on a broomstick. We are flexible.
2. A missionary only CONVEYS the message. The Holy Ghost teaches
3. When a student is prepared, the teacher will appear.
and my favorite
4. Children are the messengers we send to a time we will never see
When they re-did the hymn book, some committee made a lot of changes in some of the words of the songs. One of my hardest is
Today while the sun shines
work with a will
today all your duties with patience fulfill
Today, today,
work while you may
Prepare for tomorrow
by working today
I can see no reason to have changed that wording. I liked
THERE IS NO TOMORROW
BUT ONLY TODAY
and recently I read this which I totally agree with, and which is probably what the composer
L. Clark 1883 meant when he wrote it.
Today is all you have. Tomorrow is just today again
Next week? Seven todays in a row
A month isn't 30 days
It is 30 todays.
Usually when we sing those songs in church that they have changed, I just sing the old words anyway, because those are the ones I remember.
COME SEE OREGON
Winter's not the time to come if you don't care for cold
so wait for summer suns to melt
such beauty you'll behold in early SPRING !
the mountains sing!
Each thing just reaches out to you
and says
Oh! come see Oregon
It's the only thing to do
If you want cool caressing evenings
when we sit around and talk
and watch the moon come up
We seldom listen for the clock
Then SUMMER is the time to be here
and see Oregon in full bloom!
Wheat fields in the FALL delight
as evening comes , the moon
is better yet in August
Brighter even in SEPTEMBER
giving us its glory
All the year we will remember that
no matter what the reason or the season
Come and see!
Oregon feels wonderful!
to folks like you
and me
ONE MORE SPRING!
#
One more spring! the daffodils and buttercups to see
One more spring
to head into a lake
Just you and me, we'll take our fishing poles
a peanut butter sandwich and a drink
and
we can spend the day together
just sit back and think
about the snow we trudged in, bundled up
back then in November
Oh!
I'm glad for one more spring!
I need time to remember all my blessings
World, so clean and fresh now in the month of May
I settle back
and feel the sun
it's gentle warming ray falls out across the water
World!
You are too beautiful for me!
Thank you, God
for one more spring
that you've poured out on me
GRANDPA MAY'S
WORLD FAMOUS
MOTORCYCLE GLOVES One day when we were cleaning out the attic in Baker
to sell the house, Beth and I were up there with Daddy
going through some things. He got this cute little smile in his eye and said,
"I'll show you something I'll bet you've never seen"
*
He was right. He held up his old original motorcycle gloves,
the ones he wore when he and Mom went to Logan to get married.
He put them on, held his arms out and said,
"Let's go!"
and I think he would have just hopped on and gone for a ride right then
if Mom had been there with him.
I think Allen has them now, in fact, he also has a big motorcycle now,
and very well may wear Daddy's gloves when he takes a spin
around Pleasant Grove, Utah
or
if he doesn't
he should
THE SWALLOWS ARE BACK!
That means it is definitely spring This is the view from the deck off the upper bedroom
Some years they build and stay, other years
they just check us out and then fly away
I HOPE THEY STAY!
Either way,
IT'S
SPRING!
BOUNTIFUL - About 1968
FRESNO - about 1972
I just read someone else's blog, and she happened to mention that a new baby
should always be laid on his back in the crib to prevent SIDS
I find this very interesting.
Back in my baby years, from 1953-1967, the rule was:
*
NEVER FOR ANY REASON SHOULD YOU LAY A BABY ON HIS BACK.
BABY MUST ALWAYS BE LAID ON HIS STOMACH, TO AVOID CHOCKING
(OR WHATEVER IT WAS)
ALL 7 OF MY BABIES INSISTED ON LAYING ON THEIR BACKS,
AND NOT A ONE HAD ANY COMPLICATIONS
ONLY A COUPLE ENDED UP WITH A FLAT HEAD
Sorry, can't tell which ones
But that just goes to show you how things change:
NEVER SAY NEVER
the rules will be changed next year.
I'd say, let the baby decide for himself!
MOTHER'S DAY was an especially fun time for me. I got to give one of the talks in Sacrament meeting. I love giving talks, especially about my mother. One of the stories I told also included my Dad. When Mom was 12 years old, she went to the Logan temple to do baptisms for the dead. She loved being there, and told herself~~~~"When I get married, it's going to be in the Logan Temple" A year later she moved to Baker, Oregon, a long long drive from Logan.
In 1928 She had met my Dad, the man of her dreams
and they planned their wedding trip to Logan Temple. Very few people then had cars, but my Dad had a motorcycle and sidecar for his business. So Mom climbed in the sidecar and they were on their way. I can't remember just how long it took, but it was probably a windy ride.
My Dad's relatives lived all over Utah, so they stopped overnight with several of them, and Mom said it's a great way to get acquainted with new family.
I
I think that considering the ride and all, Mom's dress looked great!
What a classy looking couple
And just look at her, side-saddle in this pose.
All in all, the trip was great, and so was the marriage,
considering it lasted for 62 years!
They went back to the temple many times over
but only once on a motorcycle.
I was so blessed with such great parents
and always knew I was loved.
Thanks, Mom
