For Christmas Karen sent me two amaryllis plants,
one of my favorite flowers ever, since I consider them resurrection
symbols, whose beauty springs from an old dead bulb.
It's so fun to have them on the kitchen cupboard and watch
as they double and triple and even end up with
four gorgeous blossoms.
You can just see God's handiwork
right before your eyes, in the middle of the winter.

And lo and behold!
There is winter beauty!

thanks Karen

I HAVE THESE TWO CUTE HAPPY LITTLE BEARS
IN THE WINDOW OF MY BATHROOM
OVERLOOKING THINGS.
They were a gift from a bunch of my friends when we left Fresno,
and are obviously bookends.
The other day I walked in to see them facing the other direction
obviously watching the snow outside.
Dee told me he thought they were tired of being inside, just like
we are.
And it's good to have a window to look out of.
At least one is courious, the other is
perfectly happy to be inside where it's cozy.

I was cleaning out a desk drawer and came across a poem from the past
I'd almost forgotten I wrote

Joy comes in many sizes
wrapped in the body of a baby child
Some are always on the go
moving fast and wild
and getting into this and touching that
so quick they can't be caught
*
while others sit and smile at you
not caring whether or not
they ever crawl, 'cause after all
There is no need to be on the go
if you are warm and dry and full
and your Mom's right there
and you know
that you are loved
*
The key to life, whether old or very small
*
TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE LOVED
*
Oh, that's the greatest thing of all

A GREAT GIFT FROM THE PAST
When Dee was practicing medicine in Fresno
he once delivered a baby girl that was planned for adoption
which didn't work out.
We had a friend from Baker days, Linda Eardley
who was anxious to have a baby but unsuccessful.
Dee called, she said, I WANT HER!
and then the miracle happened.
I remember the day he handed the baby to Linda
in the hallway of the hospital.
Such JOY on all sides.
Every year since then, for some 35 years,
Linda has sent us a picture of little
JoDee
as she grew
Then came photos of her two little boys
Dean and Hyatt
year after year.
This year

we finally met the entire Childs family
JoDee, Dean, Hyatt, and Larvas
in this lovely Christmas card.
To quote Linda's letter
"I will never be able to thank you enough for that most
wonderful Christmas 'gift' you brought into our lives
35 years ago.
You will always be special to us."
A MIRACLE FOR ALL OF US AND AN ETERNAL BOND

This was one of my favorite Christmas cards.
My old friend (she's not old, the friendship is)
Diane Mack from Fresno days has 7 grown kids
and a bunch of grandkids,
but this is photos of her 7 when they were babies.
Such a fun idea
"Sometimes the smallest things take up
the most room in your heart"
Winnie the PoohAs Ben and Kim left early in the morning
it was about 5 degrees, and we have lots of snow.
but

they were happy to be on their way home.
Grandkids are great! Come more often

And here is Mark's family
A bunch of beautiful people
and two more babies on the way.

Thomas on Christmas day. He kind of
collects frogs, and I'd found a bunch at a yard sale ages ago,
so he got them
(doesn't look too impressed)
We really enjoyed having Linn, Keiko and Thomas over.
Best of all, Thomas helped Dee with his laptop
and got it happy and running like it should
which made Grandpa also happy
and running like he should

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
So, we finally got ourselves out of 2010 and
OUT of the BOOT!
After 4 months, it feels so good. Still a bit tender
if I walk too much, but
Christmas came and went.
